Musical Muses 3: Hazel English, Five and Dime

Lyric Excerpt

The way you’re looking at me
Every time i leave
It makes me feel like i am going crazy
The way you’re looking at me
Feel like i can’t breathe

Gotta get away
’Cause you’re taking up all of my time
You know i need my space
So i’m heading to the five and dime

I’m definitely a fool for sad love songs. Gentle sways, the warmth of two hands clasped together, and the tension of impending separation. Don’t let the bright upstrokes of the guitar and tambourine fool you. Five and Dime takes on the idea of love at the crossroads.

When the other person’s domineering presence in their mind doesn’t fill their heart, the form of escape comes as a place of stability and comfort. I think at the core it’s a very relatable experience further complemented by the rosy nostalgia of the overall composition. Also, who doesn’t like a good slide guitar.

Fun Facts: Five and Dime is a nod to the east bay (510) and an unintentional reference to dollar store predecessors, nickel and dime stores. This adds to the vintage mood if you so wish to season your imagination with the unintentional pun as well.
